Dental Care

Dental Care Is A Passion

Dental disease is one of the most common health issues affecting dogs and cats, with gingivitis and periodontal disease leading to inflamed, painful gums and a weakening of the attachment between the tooth and the jawbone. Unlike the cavities and caries commonly seen in humans, pets experience progressive gum disease.

Other dental concerns include malocclusions in young animals—where teeth grow in the wrong direction, causing trauma and pain—along with tooth resorption in cats and fractured or injured teeth. Because pets rarely show obvious signs of discomfort, dental disease often progresses unnoticed, making regular preventive care essential to maintaining long-term oral health.

Dental Care Starts At Home

The best dental care starts at home with daily brushing or wiping of your pet’s teeth, along with a diet designed to slow the progression of gum disease. However, even with good home care, all pets will require professional dental prophylaxis (scale and polish), including dental X-rays, at varying intervals throughout their life. Pet owners should watch for signs of dental disease, including bad breath (which is never normal), facial swelling, and pain when eating.

If a tooth is fractured and has pulp exposure or signs of infection on X-ray, surgical extraction is necessary to prevent painful abscesses from forming. In cases without pulp exposure, we may monitor the tooth, or for recent fractures, we may recommend root canal therapy.

Individual Dental Care

There is no one-size-fits-all approach, and we tailor recommendations to each pet’s needs. We perform a thorough dental check at every routine health visit—at least every six months—to catch issues early.

Beth and Hugo are here to advocate for your pet.

Greenslopes Family Vet Clinic offers a full suite of pet veterinary services. Book an appointment today.  Your pet will thank you.
