Anaesthesia and
older pets –
Reducing the risks

Administering anaesthesia to any animal involves a certain degree of risk. However, these risks are significantly elevated in older pets due to a variety of factors. Age-related physiological changes, such as decreased organ function and a weakened immune system, can make older animals more susceptible to complications from anaesthesia. Additionally, older pets are more likely to have pre-existing health conditions, such as heart disease, kidney disease, or liver disease, which can further increase the risks associated with anaesthesia.

Despite these risks, anaesthesia is often necessary for older pets to undergo essential medical procedures, such as surgery, dental cleanings, or diagnostic tests. Therefore, it is crucial to take steps to reduce the risks associated with anaesthesia in older animals.

Strategies for reducing risk

At Greenslopes Family Vet Clinic, we take extra precautions when administering anaesthesia to older pets. Our experienced anaesthesia team follows a tailored approach to ensure each pet’s safety and comfort.

Before any procedure, our veterinary team conducts a thorough pre-anaesthetic assessment to identify any potential risks. This includes:

  • A detailed physical examination
  • Blood tests to assess liver and kidney function, blood sugar levels, and overall health
  • Electrocardiography (ECG) to check heart function if needed
  • Chest X-rays or ultrasound in cases where additional screening is required
Understanding your pet’s health status enables us to make informed decisions about the safest anaesthesia protocol.

Anaesthesia is not a one-size-fits-all approach

Anaesthesia is not a one-size-fits-all approach—especially for older pets. We tailor our anaesthetic plan to each pet’s specific needs.

  • Using lower doses of anaesthetic drugs to reduce strain on the body
  • Selecting the most appropriate type of anaesthesia (local, regional, or general)
  • Administering intravenous (IV) fluids during the procedure to maintain blood pressure and support kidney function
  • Providing oxygen support and temperature regulation to keep your pet stable throughout the procedure

Your pet is carefully monitored throughout the procedure using state-of-the-art equipment and hands-on veterinary supervision. Electrocardiography (ECG) Tracks heart rhythm to detect abnormalities early. Blood pressure monitoring ensures circulation remains stable. Pulse oximetry measures oxygen levels in the blood, while Capnography monitors carbon dioxide levels to assess lung function.

These tools allow us to catch potential complications in real time and make immediate adjustments if necessary.

Pain management and gentle recovery care

Pain control is a critical part of post-anaesthetic care, especially for senior pets who may already be managing arthritis or other discomforts. We use multimodal pain relief strategies such as Pre-operative and post-operative pain medications, anti-inflammatory drugs when appropriate, and gentle warming blankets to maintain body temperature and provide a quiet, stress-free recovery environment.

After anaesthesia, we monitor your pet closely to ensure they wake up comfortably and recover smoothly.
