Anxiety In Dogs Can Be Common
Anxiety in dogs is a common behavioural issue that can manifest in various ways, including excessive barking, destructive behaviour, pacing, shaking, panting, or withdrawal from social interaction.
Some dogs may exhibit aggression or compulsive behaviours, such as excessive licking or chewing. Anxiety can be triggered by different factors. Separation from their owner, loud noises (like thunderstorms or fireworks), changes in routine, or past trauma.
Recognising these signs early can help dog owners address the underlying cause and seek appropriate treatment.
What Treatments Are Available?
For dogs experiencing severe anxiety, there are prescribed medications to help manage symptoms. Common vet-approved medications include fluoxetine (Prozac), clomipramine (Clomicalm), and trazodone, which are used to reduce anxiety and improve behaviour. In some cases, dexmedetomidine (Sileo) may be prescribed to help dogs cope with noise-related stress.
These medications are often used alongside behavioural training, environmental modifications, and natural calming aids to provide a comprehensive approach to managing anxiety. Before administering any medications it is essential to consult a veterinarian to determine the best treatment plan for each individual dog.
