Heartworm Is A Serious Risk
Heartworm is a serious and potentially fatal disease that affects both dogs and cats, with infection occurring when mosquitoes inject microscopic larvae into the bloodstream.
The insidious nature of heartworm disease means that pets often show no symptoms in the early stages, making prevention absolutely critical. Because mosquitoes are the carriers, even indoor-only pets remain at risk, highlighting the need for consistent, year-round protection.
Prevention Is An Easy Option
Highly effective monthly oral treatments are available for at-home administration, while the most convenient and reliable option—the annual heartworm injection—can be administered by our qualified veterinarians at Greenslopes Family Vet Clinic.
For dogs, treatment should begin with monthly oral preventatives from 6–8 weeks of age, with the injectable option available from their 12-week vaccination onwards. Cats require lifelong monthly prevention, as there is no approved injectable option for them.
If a dog has gone more than three months without protection, a quick blood test at our clinic—taking just 10 minutes—can determine whether it is safe to start or resume preventative treatment.
